QuarkImmedia will empower designers
Article Abstract:
Quark's QuarkImmedia multimedia add-on to QuarkXPress will enable the vast number of designers practiced in QuarkXPress to apply their skills and existing work in products re-purposed for the Internet and multimedia markets. The software allows designers to embed links in existing and freshly created material, embed audio and video elements and control the presentation with simple scripting. The package is ideal for text-based applications requiring searching capabilities and tight control over appearance. Quark files can be large, however, and users of QuarkImmedia are well-advised to take pains to minimize the size of Web-served documents. The software will be available initially in Jun 1996 for Macintosh, with a Windows version in the offing. A freeware viewer will also be available.

Don't underestimate CorelDraw 8
Article Abstract:
Corel's CorelDraw 8 impresses with its depth and breadth of features. The most impressive enhancement is the interface overhaul. Many tools now execute in real time, so users can instantly see the effects of their manipulations. Users can customize the placement of hot keys, palettes and tools. Other new features include improved WYSIWYG HTML output, Java Export and photorealistic drop shadows. The Corel Photo-Paint image-editor fully supports PhotoShop plug-ins. Panoramas can be created with the new Stitch tool. The CorelDream 3D modeling module offers more realistic rendering as well as 3DMF and VRML support for Web export. CorelDraw 8 for the Mac is nearly identical to its Windows sibling. CorelDraw 8 costs $695 or $249 for the upgrade, which makes it an excellent deal.

Web video: the battle heats up
Article Abstract:
Peak demands and varying bandwidths make streaming full-motion video over the Internet quite difficult, but VXtreme and Progressive Networks are fielding innovative solutions. The two companies believe that streaming video demands intelligent servers that can handle peak loads while optimizing playback in real time. Vivo, Iterated Systems and others argue that any HTTP server will do as long as their authoring tools are used. The huge installed base of Progressive Networks RealAudio should help RealVideo gain momentum. Unlike RealVideo, VXtreme's Web Theater 2.0 responds to network congestion by dynamically changing the size of the video stream. Because RealVideo and Web Theater can scale up, they compete against IP multicast products.
