Quest 5.0a for Windows
Article Abstract:
Allen Communication's $3,995 Quest 5.0a for Windows is an authoring environment for computer-based training systems. The product has an easy learning curve and a modular structure that makes it easier to accommodate large projects. It includes many high-end authoring features, and can link with other Windows programs. It can be used to create internal or customer training applications or CD-ROM tutorials, made easy with object scripting and a C language interface. It uses a flow chart metaphor, with individual frames added to the flow chart. Elements are linked by dragging flow lines. Each frame's content is called an Object List, which is a script that is created by selecting objects. Users enjoy immediate access to common object types, and pop-up editors let users create hot spots and other user interactions. After the title is created, it can be packaged with the Release editor. A copy of the runtime package can be included in the release file.

Automate analog video editing on your desktop
Article Abstract:
Gold Disk's VideoDirector and Abbate's Video Toolkit let Macintosh and PC users perform analog editing and other video tasks and can be used in projects in which picture quality is more important than fast digital editing. VideoDirector runs on both Windows PCs and Macintoshes; it has a stylish custom graphic interface. Video Toolkit runs on the Macintosh and is based on Apple's HyperCard Player; it looks utilitarian in contrast to VideoDirector. VideoDirector is a better choice for those with little or no video experience; the Windows version provides more features, especially when combined with optional video output hardware. Video Toolkit is the best choice for the Macintosh because it supports a wider range of equipment. VideoDirector costs $199.95, while Video Toolkit costs from $279 to $299.

Newly polished icons: Authorware, IconAuthor and Quest
Article Abstract:
In a comparison of three multimedia authoring tools, Macromedia's Authorware 3.0, Allen Communications' Quest 5.1 and AimTech's IconAuthor 7.0 all received highly respectable ratings. The products are costly, with Quest running $3,995 and the others $4,995. All three packages offer nice upgrades incorporating greater connectivity and Internet features. These products differ from others in the authoring arena in their flowchart-based approach to authoring. IconAuthor and Authorware are quite similar, while Quest varies in its storyboard design concept. Each package is shipped in Windows versions and communicates with PC hardware through media control interface (MCI) program calls, external functions through DLL, with PC and mainframe databases using ODBC and with other applications via OLE.
