Report: Y2K will cost North America $145 billion

The latest study by research and consulting company Killen & Assoc predicts that North American corporations' projects to address the Year 2000 computer date transition (Y2K) issue will account for more than 50% of the estimated worldwide spending of $280 billion on this problem. The projected figures include Y2K systems integration, professional services and outsourcing services during the 1997-2002 time period. The report outlines projected Y2K expenditures for the major geographic regions of North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, South America, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

The marketplace in the late 1990s requires a new information technology (IT) value proposition which provides 'pay-as-you-go' computing solutions that deliver data in timely fashion at the right place and at the right cost. IT strategists or business managers ought to acknowledge that IT change is inevitable and moving at increasingly faster rates of change than were ever planned for. The IT infrastructure must therefore be remodeled into a migration-ready, standardized infrastructure that is ready to absorb viable technology change in planned fashion.

Getting managers to "get it!"

Getting managers to understand technology in the world of computer training is a considerable challenge for training professionals in organizations. The majority of computer training efforts are not even priorities of most business unit managers. Yet organizations must take the matter of computer literacy seriously to encourage managers to support the learning process. Furthermore, training programs on technology that are specifically for managers must also be developed.
