Ricoh seeks CD-R/RW drives as multimedia printers as market takes off

Ricoh Company Ltd of Japan was one of the first companies in the computer storage device industry to develop CD-RW drives and media. Ricoh's DMS Products Division's Strategic Planning Office general manager, Kazuo Kobayashi, revealed in an interview that prices declining below $200 have been one of the factors driving increasing demand for CD-R and CD-RW drives. He predicts that worldwide demand for CD-R and CD-RW drives will reach about 15 million units in 1999 and perhaps 20 million to 30 million units by 2000. Demand for CD-R and CD-RW media will reach 1.5 billion to 2 billion units.

Voluminous GigaMO system opens new horizons for multimedia operations
Article Abstract:
Fujitsu Ltd and Sony Corp have jointly developed a large-capacity recording media format designed for use in multimedia systems and other memory-intensive applications. Called the GigaMO 3.5-inch disc, the disc offers a 1.3GB capacity in a 3.5-inch format. The higher capacity is the result of an innovation known as Magnetically Induced Super Resolution, which enhances linear and track density.
