Slim DVD-ROM fattens Matsushita's chances in notebook PCs
Article Abstract:
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. and Matsushita Kotobuki Electronics Co. Ltd. are offering the SR-8171 DVD-ROM drive, one of the first DVD-ROM drives designed for notebook computers. The 12.7mm-thick drive uses one of the smallest, lightest pickups available. Because the pickup uses two lasers, the drive can reproduce signals from CD-ROMs, rewritable CDs and recordable CDs. When working with DVDs, the drive attains 2x data transfer speeds with the use of an LSI chip set and an integrated optical pickup for DVDs. With CD-ROMs, the drive delivers a 20x transfer speed for data reproduction.

Matsushita helps large-capacity MO drives gain acceptance
Article Abstract:
Magneto-optical (MO) discs and drives are the most popular large-capacity removable, rewritable disc system in Japan. Highly reliable and offering fast access speed, the 230MB drive can write data on and read data from both 128MB and 230MB discs. The 640MB and the 1.3GB drive can also do the same for lower-capacity MO discs. This capability saves the users money by allowing the use of less-expensive lower-capacity discs.
