Technology Update: New Digital Chip for Speech Recognition Systems Seeks to Duplicate Sound Processing Capabilities of the Ear
Article Abstract:
An accurate, cost-effective means of computerizing the recognition of natural language may finally be realized in the late 1980's. A novel digital chip, the KSC 2408, from Kurzweil Applied Intelligence Inc., is a microelectronic duplication of the way in which the human ear and brain process sound. Further, sophisticated linguistic analysis programs have been developed that can deal with the acoustic ambiguity of homophones, words that sound identical but differ in spelling, origin, and meaning. One of the company's goal's is to build a marketable voice-activated typewriter. A diagram shows the human-machine analog sound process.
