Telecommunications
Article Abstract:
Installation of a Local Area Network (LAN) involves consideration of the problems and costs of LAN wiring, a potential hidden cost neglected by many vendors and left to installation subcontractors. Different forms of wiring, (coaxial, optical fiber, twisted pair cable, or flat connector cable) as well as wiring distribution (the physical path of the wire) impose speed limitation considerations on the system. Existing telecommunications wiring may be inadequate due to insufficient capacity or inability to integrate voice and data. Building codes, limited duct space and office layout may also interfere with the installation of a LAN. IBM document no. G320-8059-0, entitled 'A Building Planning Guide for Communications Wiring', is recommended as a basic tutorial on the subject.

Telecommunications
Article Abstract:
Francis Dzubeck describes the current state of confusion in the communications field since the breakup of AT&T. Unfortunately, he sees no immediate relief. Businesses depending on communications are being hurt by delays in delivery that, under the old unified management, took eighteen days and now take forty-eight days to ten months. The contractor-subcontractor relationship between AT&T Communications and local operating companies is the base of the problem. Paper work is staggering. Local operating company customers receive preferential treatment. Illegal charges are assessed by small operating and independent telephone companies. Only time will tell if the intended benefits are worth the consequences.
