The Government Office - A Growing Number of OA Vendors Are Introducing 'Secure' Systems
Article Abstract:
The federal government requires microcomputers used in classified work to meet stringent electronic signal emission standards, known as Tempest Standards. Electronic emissions from terminals can be detected by eavesdroppers and reconstituted to reveal the information displayed on the terminal. Wang's Tempest-accredited Alliance system 16-bit Professional Computer uses mesh screen covers and special anti-emission paint to filter emissions from the keyboard and monitor, emission suppression filters on the power leads, and emission-proof fiber optic cable to link modules. Other firms competing in the secure government office automation market are Zenith Data Systems, Digital Equipment Corp., Honeywell and Systematics, Inc.
