The 'Intelligent' Building - Easier Access to Office Automation
Article Abstract:
The concept of building intelligence as a utility that provides information systems throughout an office building, confronts office executives today. Systems within the intelligent building can be independent or integrated. The foundation of building intelligence is a building automation system that monitors and controls the comfort of building occupants. Other systems in building intelligence are telecommunications and office automation. Achieveing a fully intelligent building requires integrating the systems. This is possible through structural interfacing, the most sophisticated and expensive means being broadband coaxial cable as universal wiring. Today the capability to have this total integration does not exist. Benefits of the intelligent building are high productivity, flexibility, and effectiveness through better overall control of operations. Executives can see that their operations benefit from developments in building intelligence by keeping informed of developments, remaining flexible in vendor selection, and consideraing a firm specializing in systems integration. A wiring and system plan for an integrated office automation, building automation, and voice-data communication network is shown.
