The Office of the Next Decade (Part 3): The Present and Potential Use of Local Area Networks and Data Links
Article Abstract:
An industry survey was conducted by the Japan Business Machine Manufacturers Association in regards to how the computer industry will evolve from now to 1994. This part focuses on local area networks. In Japan it is still not known whether star, ring or bus networks will dominate. Text processing and data base management are most important to the business user. The International Standards Organization (ISO) is leading the way in the all-important implementation of standards. General market trends are not expected to change much. Teletext has not yet hit Japan, but it is coming. Graphics are becoming more important. Home banking is now being developed in Japan. Electronic conference systems will be a big gainer. Tables show projections for office supplies, teletext, and computer graphics. Other tables describe various business graphics products and home banking services available. A graph shows the use of business graphics in the United States by application.

Long-Awaited Growth Projected for Electronic Mail Market
Article Abstract:
The once quiet electronic mail market will increase dramatically according to a Creative Strategies International report. Revenues by 1988 will reach 3.4 billion dollars. This growth is attributed to user acceptance, cost-benefit ratios and the increase of microcomputers and local area networks. Electronic mail can be operated on desktop computers. TWX-TELEX, facsimile, messaging, and value-added network services are all part of electronic mail. Nonvoice communications and public data networks will grow dramatically. Facsimile systems will interface with messaging systems and there will be more low-end facsimile equipment on the market. PBX sales will not level off before 1986 or 1987. Communication processor revenues will double in two years. Sales will ultimately depend on user-friendliness.
