Web servers need power, speed and multimedia savvy
Article Abstract:
The free GNNServer software for UNIX and Windows NT made by GNN Hosting Service is rated as the most powerful among the eight evaluated Web server software packages. Silicon Graphics' Unix-based WebForce Indy, which costs $10,995, and Intergraph Computer Systems Corp's InterServe Web-300 for Windows NT, which sells for $9,500, lead the six Web server hardware products. GNNServer incorporates powerful tools for Web-site creation, browsing and management. Among the other Web-server software, the Microsoft Internet Information Server, which is distributed free, the CompuServe/Spry Web Server, which costs $245, and the $295 Process Software Purveyor rate as above-average. Purveyor is the best choice for a personal Web server because it is for Windows 95. Among the hardware, the $6,879 Apple Internet Server Solution is rated above average because it is the easiest to operate and has a low price. DEC's Alpha Server 1000 4/266, priced at $15,990, is also rated above average, because it runs on UNIX and Windows NT and is versatile.

Freeway 1.0
Article Abstract:
SoftPress Systems' $299 Freeway 1.0 is a useful Macintosh-only Web page design application that targets desktop publishers and graphic designers. It allows designers to quickly create basic Web sites without any prior knowledge of HTML by using familiar typographic tools. Freeway's intuitive interface, easy-to-use tool palettes and master-page logic also help users quickly learn and use the program. However, Freeway lacks a frames editor and support for browser features like Dynamic HTML, Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript. It is also unable to import existing HTML files. While site designers with more HTML experience can add customized code, future Freeway versions should incorporate more cutting-edge technologies.

AutoMedia AutoMasker 1.5
Article Abstract:
AutoMedia's $1,099.99 AutoMasker 1.5 image processing software provides developers with a powerful tool for creating layered media projects with video. The application uses a form of edge detection to automate the creation of an alpha channel from footage not shot on a blue-screen stage. The interface is easy to use, though it does require an unbroken outline or the entire mask will disappear when Local Trim is clicked. The immediate feedback of the linked preview screen is an excellent tool for understanding the actual look and integration of the mask or a sample background. AutoMasker will effectively integrate into many multimedia and post-production environments.
