ZIP + 4: It's Impact on Mail Operations
Article Abstract:
The United States Postal Service has instituted zip plus four, an additional zip code designed to speed up delivery and hold down postage costs. Four more numbers have been added that designate a part of a street or a particular address. Optical and bar code scanning equipment will be used by the new system to process standardized letters. Companies can also receive internal zip codes for their own use. The Postal Service will also help companies with code directory computer tapes and bar codes. With the new system, mail handling is expected to increase from 1,850 per hour to 4,000 to 10,000. Savings are expected to come from smaller payrolls and return on investment. Equipment is being supplied by Pitney-Bowes, Burroughs and Bell and Howell.

Shredder Security - Keeping the 'Ordinary' Confidential
Article Abstract:
The growth of the paper shredding maket to $80 million in 1984 is due largely to technology. Computers and copiers are responsible for the increase in hard copy, some of it sensitive material, such as designs, production information and bidding details. Douglas Aircraft Company and GE Information Services have elaborate shredding systems. Any shredding system requires the inclusion of salaries, customer lists, and research projects. Shredders justify their costs by saving storage space and preparing paper for sale and recycling. Sizes range from $100 minis to those with conveyor belts costing several thousand dollars. Several shredder suppliers are listed and steps for setting up a system are documented.
