Automation May Increase Discrimination: A Conversation with Karen Nussbaum
Article Abstract:
An interview with Karen Nussbaum, leader of the AFL-CIO District 925 office worker local and head of the 9 to 5 Association of Working Women, is reported. Women may very well encounter the same discrimination in restructured automated office jobs as they did in traditional ones. Discrimination in the type of low-paying job offered and in the lack of training for upward mobility have been the norm. Women are expressing concern that the job values, hiring practices, and pay for automated jobs should present opportunities. Other issues are health and safety in the office, as indicated by the Framingham Heart Study and NIOSH VDT study.

Editorial: Tragedy in the Skies Recalls a Lesson on Limits of Modern Technology
Article Abstract:
In the debate over whether the shooting down of the Korean 747 by the Russians over the Kamchatka Peninsula was due to human error or was deliberate, the possibility of equipment malfunction must be considered. Equipment failure could happen to the outmoded computer systems of the North American Aerospace Defense Command or the FBI fingerprinting files. Technology must be supported by the best of fail-safe procedures, management and operations.

The Big Change In WP User Sites
Article Abstract:
The traditional word processing center is no longer so popular in the business environment. Instead, a more traditional secretarial arrangement, updated with a word processor, is becoming popular again. The Stevenson & Hanson Research Group (SHRG) conducted a study in 1982 which revealed these trends. Also noted was an increase in the use of walk-up workstations available to both secretaries and executives.
