A stitch in time
Article Abstract:
The UK National Trust aims to conserve historic buildings and began its work in 1896 with the purchase of a medieval house in need of repair. The trust has received donations of country houses which have been too expensive for owners to maintain. Architects specialising in conservation have received commissions from the trust to repair buildings which it owns. Architects need to be able to ascertain which work should be carried out urgently in order to preserve the building.

Wreck of ages
Article Abstract:
The UK National Trust has restored the Igtham Mote manor house in Kent, England. The building is complex and has had work carried out on it over several centuries. Revenue has come from opening the house to visitors. The building is located on an island round which is a moat. Sand was selected to match original mortar, and limestone was brought from Wiltshire as more durable and attractive than Portland stone used for previous repairs.
