The National Marine Manufacturers Assn (NMMA) asked for a new approach to doing business during the media briefing at the 2001 Miami International Boat Show. NMMA Pres Thom Dammrich said the boating industry needs a cultural change, emphasizing that progress should be made in product certification and the establishment of a customer service index. The NMMA also presented its annual awards during the boat show, including the NMMA Directors Award for outstanding journalism in boating, which was given to Betsy Clayton of the Fort Myers News-Press.

Boat sales fall off in units, but dollar volume climbs
Article Abstract:
An estimated 27,800 sailboats were sold in 2000, compared with about 21,200 sold in the previous year, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Assn (NMMA). Also, the NMMA report shows that inboard motor cruisers sold in 2000 increased 14% to 8,000 units, followed by inboard runabouts which rose 9% in units and 10% in value. NMMA said US consumers spent $25.5 billion in the maritime market in 2000, which is an increase of 15% from 1999.
