Blood group mixes birthday wishes with appeal

The Brooklyn/Staten Island Blood Services has started a direct mail campaign to improve awareness and encourage repeat blood donations. The organization will send birthday cards to 4,670 registered donors in Feb, Mar and Apr 2001 that will serve as a general reminder and a thank you note. Linda Levi, developer of the program, said the birthday cards aim to create a bond with donors as well as being timely. Donors who bring the cards to the center when they donate blood agains will receive a gift certificate from Junior's in Brooklyn or from Mother Mousse Bakeries.

USPS needs rate hike to survive, adviser says

The US Postal Service (USPS) is reeling from the effects of rising costs and falling income, according to Larry Speakes, senior adviser to the Postmaster General and Press Sec during the Reagan administration. Speaking before the 11th annual Direct Marketing Assn Nonprofit Washington Conference, Speakes said the USPS has a costly infrastructure but not the means to change it. He addedd that congressional over-regulation has left the agency incapable of dealing with increasing competition from the private sector.
