Canada's data protection act becomes law, meets EU standards

Canadian businesses, particularly those in the marketing industry, are pleased that the Personal Information Protection and Electronics Documents Act has finally been enacted into law. The data protection law, which was approved in Apr 13, 2000 and will take effect on Jan 1, 2001, was proposed almost two years ago. It is designed to help Canada meet the data protection standards recently established in the European Union.

US firm forms Canadian subsidiary

Naviant Inc, a marketing firm based in Newton Square, PA, has established a Canadian subsidiary called Naviant Canada. The subsidiary will be based in Kanata, Ontario, and will be responsible for managing its parent's Canadian 'High-Tech Household' consumer database. To help the subsidiary get started, Naviant Inc has partnered with Toronto, Ontario-based Compusearch Micromarketing Data and Systems for the use of its demographic and PSYTE cluster codes.

Sears and Northern Media team up

Sears Canada and Northern Media Inc have agreed to test a package-insertion concept that will deliver coupons and product samples along with orders made using Sears catalog. The test will be launched in Sep 1999 and will cover all of Ontario, except Ottawa and Toronto. Northern Media, known for its 1-million-circulation The Shop at Home Director, is currently talking with potential advertisers to join the scheme.
