Fee wise men: Sainsbury's' Charles Johnston and British Airways' Peter Cannon, two of the industry's biggest clients, believe construction management gives them the best value for money
Article Abstract:
Proponents believe construction management is the great hope for the construction industry in the UK, and the University of Reading's Reading Production Engineering Group is launching Faster, Better Value Construction, a best-practice guide. The guide offers up to date thinking in construction management. Charles Johnston, property services manager for J Sainsbury, wants to introduce a single form of contracting in the group and expects it to be akin to construction management, rather than design, manage and construct. Peter Cannon, technical support manager for British Airways, claims that construction management helps to achieve a holistic approach to construction.

Rust plagues prewar classics: corrosion of steel frames will cost millions to remedy, says Taywood survey for DOE
Article Abstract:
Many steel framed buildings in the UK built between 1908 and 1939 are suffering widepsread corrosion of the steel frames, according to a research project funded by the DOE, undertaken by Taywood Engineering. Such corrosion can cause stonework to crack, move and, in some cases, fall off, and if allowed to continue unchecked could cause the collapse of buildings. Corrosion is mostly likely to occur where buildings have been neglected and simple maintenance procedures can reduce the chance of corrosion and slow its progress.
