Gearing up
Article Abstract:
Construction company, Simons Group is implementing an integrated computer system that will link design, costing, site management and accounting. The firm's information technology director, Ken Wealls is introducing new equipment and software over a five year period. His strategy is to take the best of the available products rather than to make do with convenient compromises. Wealls predicts that computers will become vital to the construction industry and there will be a move away from on-site planning. He believes firms that do not invest in computer systems will become uncompetitive.

Article Abstract:
James Longley is a traditional, family run building firm but it uses a unique computer system to keep record of marketing information. The database, which was written by Longley's staff, contains records of all work done, prospective work and contacts. Details of contacts and jobs are input by the staff using standard forms and the computer can produce weekly lists of prospects. Longley employs 800 workers and is committed to traditional skills and training. Its annual turnover is 80 million pounds sterling despite the recession.

Gearing up
Article Abstract:
Construction company, John Mowlem Group is planning to unify its information technology (IT) and to devise a coherant strategy. The company has 13,000 employees and has had no IT policy at all. Each division has been able to buy its own computer hardware and software, leading to a profusion of incompatible systems, many of which are old and expensive to maintain. The new plan is to introduce an open systems environment with packaged software and contracted out maintenance.
