China portals deny persistent merger reports
Article Abstract:
Several major online companies in China have denied reports of mergers. Merger rumors have surfaced because Chinese leading portals, such as China.com, sina.com, netlease.com, and sohu.com, have been losing money and competition among them has started heating up. These dot-com firms said that despite losses, they are not in danger of collapsing. However, analysts said that the portals will still need to generate revenues to avoid a takeover.

German companies follow Land's End unconditional guarantee into court
Article Abstract:
Land's End has been joined by two German companies in fighting Germany's 1932 Free Gift law which some German court say bans long-term product guarantees. The company has been sued by the German government in 1997 for violating the law that bans selling of promotional goods or services not similar to the main item sold. According to the Germans, the guarantee was in effect a separate product, not an extension of the original offer and companies are not allowed to sell it. The company is being joined by German mattress distributor, Ambra, and jeans manufacturer, Werdin, in its fight against the German government.
