Broward County tops $1.4B in marine sales

A study by the Marine Industries Assn of South Florida has reported that Broward County, FL, generated $1.4 billion in retail marine sales in FY 2000. According to the report, this figure represents nearly 1/3 of the $4.9 billion in retail marine sales reported statewide in Florida in 2000. Broward County's largest city, Fort Lauderdale, is the hub of megayacht activity and considered by some to be the yachting capital of the world.

Damien Chamberlain bought his employer's assets for between $300,00 and $400,000 and reopened the boat repair business within days, calling it Mango Marine. Now instead of developing new business for his boss, he spends most of his time doing insurance and payroll and other administrative tasks. Most of his 16 employees are doing mobile dockside service until the company can move into a proper location.
