High vaultage
Article Abstract:
The Bentalls Centre, a shopping mall in Kingston-upon-Thames, England has a 31 meter high barrel vaulted roof. The roof covers 120 meters through the centre of the building and is constructed from steel space frames glazed with flat glass. Architect and structural engineer, Building Design Partnership has installed 1728 fibre-optic lights in the 15 meter wide roof. Installing the lighting posed problems for the contractors due to the need for consistent quality of the fibres and the action of heat and sunlight. Shading is provided by perforated coffers attached to the frames.

Something borrowed something blue
Article Abstract:
The Bluewater retail park project in Dartford, England, has involved attempting to bring the story-telling elements of royal or ecclesiastical architecture into commercial architecture, according to architect Eric Kuhne. The design of this retail park draws on the values of classicism and links them with developments in materials and engineering. He believes that the fact that he was born in the US helps him to design in the UK, as he has a sharper view of British culture than most Britons.
