Skip Burden, president of American Boat & Yacht Council, emphasized the importance of nationally recognized training standards for meeting the skilled labor requirement of boating industry. In this context, recruitment efforts of Marine Industry Technical Education Council (MITEC) are discussed. Burden is also the secretary of MITEC.

Speakers and participants at the IBEX forum discussed the deterioration of workforce in the industry. Panelists opined that separating academic education and vocational education at the high school level is the main reason for the deterioration. Participants described the problem as a sociological/cultural issue.

David DeLong, an MIT expert, offered suggestions on workforce recruitment and retention. DeLong also mentioned that loss of workforce means loss of knowledge to the company. DeLong was talking at 2006 Conference on Marine Industry Technical Training, which was held in Florida.
