Marine group props up Brunswick bottom line

Brunswick Corp.'s bottom line for the second quarter of 1998 received a boost from its core marine products segment, whose revenue rose 10% to $722.6 million, while operating earnings increased 16% to $122.6 million. In the second quarter of 1997, the marine segment reported earnings of $105.8 million on sales of $659.1 million. Meanwhile, Brunswick recreation unit, which consisted of Mongoose bicycle units, Life Fitness exercise equipment and Zebco fishing products, posted a 12% sales gain to $390.4 million from $349.1 million while earnings dropped 31% to $28.9 million from $41.7 million.

Brunswick reports increased sales

Brunswick Corp., a marine engine and powerboat maker headquartered in Lake Forest, IL, posted an around 2.5% gain in marine sales in the first quarter of 1998, ended Mar. 31, 1998. The company achieved $582.9 million in marine sales in the first quarter of 1998, compared with $568.6 million in marine sales that the company achieved in the first quarter of 1997. For the same period, Brunswick's operating earnings increased to $81.5 million from $67 million and the company's overall sales increased to $904.2 million from $841.6 million.
