Merger targets off bid lists
Article Abstract:
Construction industry clients are likely to be unwilling to award work to contractors which are merging or facing takeover bids, according to leading quantity surveying firms. This trend particularly affects Tarmac and Wimpey, which will now probably not be included on the same tender list, and Amec, which is facing a hostile bid from a Norwegian concern and has recently made a rejected bid for Alfred McAlpine. Clients are concerned to ensure that contractors will be able to complete work.

Underground rules
Article Abstract:
The Jubilee Line Extension contract is based on the international FIDIC civil engineering contract, but has had conciliation and acceleration added. Including conciliation prodecures is intended to prevent claims being made, allowing disputes to be handled as they arise rather than leaving them until the end of the project. The acceleration clause allows contractors to be paid to speed up the work rathern than being awarded extensions of time.

Gummer steps up drive towards quality
Article Abstract:

He believes that civil engineers should consider how infrastructure development can be made more sustainable and acceptable to the general public.
