Abacus Direct acquires SmartBase, raises industry concern

Mailing list broker Abacus Direct announced that it has acquired rival SmartBase from Acxiom Corp for $4.7 million. SmartBase develops membership database for catalogers and mail-order consumer merchandise marketers. Abacus Direct CEO Chris Dice said the acquisition will give the company access to SmartBase's modeling techniques and capabilities. He added that Abacus wants to offer more comprehensive services to its clients since its database overlaps with that of SmartBase.

National Geographic Society taps into the list rental world

List management and brokerage firm American List Counsel has been chosen to handle the National Geographic Society's list of inactive members totalling 1.5 million. Included in the deal is the management of 240,000 video buyers, 750 book buyers and 150,000 catalog buyers that the nature and science society has. Its entry into the list rental world is aimed at attaining greater flexibility in gaining access to other outside lists.
