New focus for Simms' Tarmac

Tarmac is to concentrate on its core businesses and will be restructured to become more centralised. The construction group reported a 170 million pounds sterling fall in profits for 1991 and an 11% reduction in turnover. Its new chief executive, Neville Simms is planning to concentrate on the profitable construction division, house building and Tarmac's European operations. Building materials, industrial products and the company's Americal interests may be sold or restructured.

Changing tack at Trafalgar House

Trafalgar House is the UK's largest traditional building contractor. Management changes have taken place, due to the increasing focus on engineering and construction. The new chief executive is Allan Gormly. The Financial Reporting Review Panel has made Trafalgar cut its 1991/92 profits from 102.7 million pounds sterling to 19.7 million pounds sterling. The emergence of Hongkong Land as a 14.9% shareholder in Sep 1992 offers Trafalgar more security.

Miller's tale of idle assets

Miller Group is a family owned construction company with interests in housing development, contracting and mining. Its newly appointed chief executive, David Cawthra is the first senior staff member from outside the family. He is determined to make more use of the company's assets and is to introduce a new business plan. Cawthra admits Miller is suffering from the recession and is unlikely to improve its performance in 1992-3.
