OMC cautiously optimistic about the future

Outboard Marine Corp's (OMC) 10-K filing with the SEC which was submitted on Mar 30 reported earnings from operations of $36.8 million compared to a loss of $165.2 million in 1998. While definitely an improvement, OMC chmn and CEO David Jones acknowledged that they still have lot to do and that they are only in the second year of their turnaround. Jones also said they would offer an initial public offering only after achieving a certain operating profit and only if market conditions are suitable.

Marina owners are optimistic about 1999
Article Abstract:
A survey conducted among members of the International Marina Institute revealed that a majority expect 1999 to be an even better year than 1998. The industry's average profits for 1998 were 12.6% better compared to 1997 figures. As a sign of optimism in the year 1999, 63% of the respondents planned to add full-time staff. The most pressing concerns for the industry as a whole were regulatory constraints, followed by the recruitment and retention of quality workers.

Raytheon to unite products under single brand name
Article Abstract:
Raytheon Marine Co of Manchester, NH, has disclosed plans of uniting its different marine electronic product brands under the single brand name Raytheon. The brand names which will either be phased out or will be relabeled are Apelco and Autohelm. The firm's acquisition of the defense subsidiary of Texas Instruments and its merger with Hughes defense has expanded the market of Raytheon and necessitated the use of the name Raytheon for brand recognition.
