Article Abstract:
The pay of senior executives in the British house construction industry have risen by around 18% in 1999. Some directors of house building firms, with a turnover of between 26 million-100 million pounds sterling, have achieved increases of 28.5%. The inclusion of a company car as part of the benefits given to executives in the construction industry is starting to lose its appeal. Some companies are offering money in exchange for a company car. Managing directors and chief executives will usually be offered a car, such as a BMW 7 Series or a Jaguar, because they have to travel for their work.

Going up in our estimation
Article Abstract:
The 1999 contractors salary guide shows an acute shortage of estimators, with few young people choosing to join the profession. Some observers suggest the lack of estimators may cause wages to rise too rapidly which would have implications for the rest of the construction industry. Wages for estimators have already increased by an average of 6.9% between 1998-99. Estimators working in the south east of England can demand as much as 40,000 pounds sterling per annum. Details of the salary guide were obtained from 28 offices of the property recruitment firm Hays Montrose.
