Chase, New York reach privacy agreement

Chase Manhattan Corp has settled its dispute with state of New York over consumer privacy protection. Chase has agreed to stop sharing customer data with third parties unless Chase has obtained a clear authorization from its customers. Chase also said that in the future it will only provide the names, addresses and telephone numbers of its customers even if they consent to have their personal information shared, either online or offline.

Lawmakers propose federal seal, regs for online privacy
Article Abstract:
Congressmen Tom Campbell and Tom Undall's proposed bill calls for the institution of a federally sanctioned Web privacy seal program that will more strictly regulate commercial online content. The recommended bill also requires the Federal Trade Commission to create and award online seals of approval to commercial websites that will agree to comply to a more stringent consumer privacy protection standard compared to those guaranteed by the two leading online seal programs, New York, NY's BBBOnline and Washington, DC's TRUSTe.

Privacy hits financial world's DM efforts, threatens reform
Article Abstract:
The banking industry is at the center of a controversy over the use and selling of personal information. The industry was dragged into the privacy debate when Minnesota Attorney General Mike Hatch accused a US Bancorp subsidiary of selling consumer information to marketers. That led to a chain of events in which banks released statements explaining how they handle personal information.
