Report: Net's ad-dollar pie more like cupcake
Article Abstract:
Burst Media LLC, a Burlington, MA-based seller of Web advertising for 1,800 niche sites, reports that the 1997 ad spending was a mere $336 million. The figure is paltry compared to the nearly $1 billion that organizations such as the Internet Advertising Bureau and online research firm Jupiter Communications claim. Burst Media states that its report is not aimed to set the record straight but to help its clients manage their businesses and provide them the sense of what they can expect when they do their annual budgets. The report comes amidst that cost-per-thousand impression (CPM) rates are falling and click-through (banner response) rates are averaging only 1%.

Experian ups stake in Web loyalty firm
Article Abstract:
Experian Direct Tech has made a second investment in Schaumburg, IL-based MotivationNet, an online loyalty and incentive firm. The move to boost majority ownership in the start-up is aimed at enhancing MotivationNet, which has been having a hard time enlisting members in its MyPoints rewards program. Under the reward program, consumers can earn credits toward products and services by clicking on ads, taking surveys, making purchases and other actions at member Web sites. MotivationNet, meanwhile, is set to become an electronic outlet for Internet-based products and services previously available through Experian.
