Roof recycling interests pack Chicago forum
Article Abstract:
More than 70 individuals representing the entire spectrum of the roofing, paving and recycling industries met for a one-day seminar in Chicago, IL, on Dec 10, 1999, to discuss the challenges of recycling asphalt shingles and roll waste into road pavement. The profitability and widespread acceptance of recycling asphalt roofing waste into highway pavement material will depend largely on regional tipping fees, economies of scale and and efficiencies in the production of clean and consistent feeding stock. However, the concept has continued to appeal to roofing paving and recycling groups.

OSHA eases up on residential roofers
Article Abstract:
A report by RSI magazine has found that the number of residential roofing contractors that were fined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 2000 declined sharply by 80%. Only 2% of the respondents in the RSI magazine study reported being inspected and fined by the OSHA in 2000, while another 15% reported being visited but not fined. The figures suggest that steep-slope roofing contractors are more safety conscious.

The siding business remains static
Article Abstract:
A report by RSI magazine has found that 53% of siding installers, which experienced a tough year in 2000, expect 2001 business conditions to generally be the same as in 2001. However, only 6% of the respondents forecasted a decrease while 41% are optimistic about having a better year. Fifty-one percent of the respondents said cited the difficulty of finding qualified labor as their biggest challenge. Thirty-seven percent of the respondents said that they would like manufacturers to offer more competitive prices.
