Hewlett-Packard Co of Palo Alto, CA, will intensify its direct marketing effort with the launch of the HP Business Store. The initiative involves an Internet site, a toll-free number and a catalog that will be issued four times a year. The effort is intended to target the small and medium- sized businesses, which accounted for around 25% of the company's 1998 revenue of $47 billion.

Sendmail uses direct mail to get freeware users to buys its software

Sendmail Inc, an Emeryville, CA-based developer of a popular free e-mail application, has launched a direct mail campaign to convince corporate users to buy its commercial equivalent. The company says users of the freeware may not know all of the technology's capabilities nor be able to diagnose the software's problems. Between 70% and 80% of e-mail messages that go over the Internet are estimated to use the Sendmail code.
