A waste of effort?
Article Abstract:
Waste recycling is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, but waste collection and recycling can be costly. UK household waste totals around 17 million t annually, but less than 5% is recycled. Waste collection for recycling is only economically viable if there is an end-market for the waste. Bottle banks and other 'bring systems' cost around 25-75 pounds sterling/t of collected waste to run. Recycled paper is becoming more popular, but waste paper is less harmful to the environment than other products. In the UK, only around 25% of waste glass is recycled. Packaging accounts for over 5 million t/y of waste. Waste disposal costs local taxpayers around 175 million pounds sterling annually. Recycling and the environmental impact of glass, aluminium and steel, paper and other packaging are also discussed.
