Approaches to voice processing
Article Abstract:
There are four main approaches to obtaining a voice processing system. Proprietary systems are available from third-party suppliers, but their technology is ageing and their large size means they are being squeezed by newer, compact systems. Integral voice processing is also available with many modern telephone systems and telephone system vendors may be the best start to buying a system. Computer-based systems running on industry-standard computers are becoming more popular, while the use of the Centrex system via telephone network operators is also an option for those not wishing to choose their own systems.

Voice mail
Article Abstract:
Voice mail is the best known form of voice processing and is the one most widely used by business organisations. The commercial voice mail market is a mature one and the technology is focusing on the domestic market. Computers with integral voice processing facilities are freely available. Requirements for a computer-based system include a socket doubler and a telephone. Large organisations are likely to require purpose-built systems, possibly supplied by the maker of their telephone system. The advantages and disadvantages of voice messaging are presented, plus an overview of common features.

Interactive voice response
Article Abstract:
Interactive voice response (IVR) is a form of voice processing that allows a caller to interact with a machine to give and receive information. IVR first arrived on the market as an information delivery system providing prerecorded standard information, such as that used by cinemas. Most IVR systems being marketed require the user to have access to a TouchTone phone that enables the caller to type information such as account numbers using the TouchTone keypad. IVR systems are fairly expensive, costing from 50, 000 pounds sterling to more than 500,000 pounds sterling.
