Bank to the future: Changes to the way we do our banking and pay for goods and services, are just around the corner

New advances in home banking include screen-based services using a personal computer or a television. It is not yet widely used although it is expected to become more popular. None of the screen based system yet of the range of transactions available from telephone home banking systems. Smart cards may eventually replace plastic cards, and a smart card trial is already underway. Smart cards can store more information, on an embedded microchip. Electronic cash is an attempt to replace notes and coins, and should be quicker than paying by credit or debit card.

The voluntary Banking Code of Practice, being introduced on Mar 16, 1992, is designed to give a fairer deal to UK building society and bank users, although some important issues remain uncovered. The Code's provisions cover areas such as complaints and fair conduct but fail to include advance warning of charges and means to prevent fraud. Banks have up to two years to fully adopt the Code.
