Most plain-paper fax machines are sold mainly through distributors and dealers who normally offer the best discounts. However, low-end machines are increasingly available through retail outlets such as Dixons and Office World. Prices range from under 1,000 pounds sterling to more than 2,500 pounds sterling, but a discount should always be available. Running costs for plain-paper faxes depend upon the number of documents received each day and some models may be cheaper to run than others.

Plain-paper faxes are available through a number of different suppliers, including distributors and direct sales. Some 26% of fax equipment in the UK was bought through retailers in 1996, although dealers have the largest market share. The characteristics of the fax equipment sales channel are analysed.
