Buying in the EC: your shopping guide
Article Abstract:
Customers taking advantage of the removal of trade barriers between EC countries on Jan 1, 1993 to make savings on a range of products should take certain precautions to avoid problems if things go wrong. Customers should obtain written assurance that electrical products purchased abroad can be used in the UK and obtain a valid EC-wide guarantee if possible. Buying goods from an outlet that has agents in the UK is also advised. At present, customers with a complaint about a product they have bought have to take legal action in the country in which the goods were purchased.

Buying for DIY
Article Abstract:
The three main types of DIY outlet in the UK are high street independent DIY stores, DIY superstores and builders' merchants. Superstores offer a very wide range of products, and are now trying to compete with independent outlets in terms of service. They tend to offer the lowest prices, but builders' merchants are generally worth visiting if specialist advice is required.
