Cheap and chilly
Article Abstract:
Fridge-freezers often have one thermostat control, but if a lot of freezing is done, a two-control model is required. This is easier for defrosting. Frost-free models have less freezer space and are more expensive to operate. The new CFC-free versions should be available in summer 1993. The results of tests on 42 models are tabulated. Only five had built-in freezer thermometers. The Eurotech RF7001 is a recommended one-control model and the Scandinova SFF7054 and Frigidaire Elite FRE2792 are good two-control models.

Cool operators
Article Abstract:
It is worth selecting a fridge-freezer with two thermostat controls, allowing the temperature in the fridge and freezer sections to be controlled separately. Frost-free models are also attractive, as they allow fresh food to be frozen more quickly than conventional models and packets remain largely free of ice. The best choice in terms of cooling chemicals is hydrocarbon gases, which do not damage the ozone and make no significant contribution to global warming.

The big chill
Article Abstract:
The Siemens KG-28V20 GB/01 one-control fridge-freezer is recommended in a survey of 21 fridge-freezers. The product costs 350 pounds sterling and is available from John Lewis Partnership. The Beko CN260 and Indesit CG 1268 one-control products are also recommended. Hotpoint's FF93 came out tops among the two-control models, along with Bauknecht KGC 3354/2 and the Scandinova FF6745D.
