Doing your homework: Home improvements can make your house or flat a nicer place to be. But which ones can improve your chances of a return on your investment, when it's time to move on?
Article Abstract:
Nearly half of homeowners undertake improvements to their houses and flats each year. A survey of estate agents was undertaken to determine the effects of some popular home improvements on the value and saleability of a property. The agents agreed that central heating would increase a property's value, but costs are unlikely to be recouped. A new fitted kitchen was likely to increase saleability, but replacing wooden sash windows with PVC-u casement windows could make a property harder to sell in London.

Choose the right survey: a survey is one of the most important parts of buying a house or flat. Here's how to make sure it doesn't turn into the worst part
Article Abstract:
The three main types of house survey reports are: a valuation required by the bank or building society that contains a brief description of obvious problems; a Home Buyers' Survey and Valuation, which should reveal any major faults; and a building survey, which is more comprehensive. It is difficult to claim compensation if unexpected problems arise after moving into a home. There are schemes to settle disputes run by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, or court action, which can be costly.
