There were more than 66,000 domestic fires to which fire brigades were called in the UK in 1994, of which misuse of domestic appliances accounted for 23% and arson 21%. The number of people who die in house fires is declining, mainly as a result of the growing use of smoke alarms, but the number of fires is not falling. It is vital to plan in advance how to deal with a fire, practising using various escape routes, for example. It is also important to install a smoke alarm, and possibly purchase a fire blanket and a fire extinguisher.

House fires in the UK during 1990 reached some 62,300, resulting in the deaths of 627 people and insurance claims of 209 million pounds sterling. Statistics suggest that upholstery and bedding, chip pans and smoking stand out as major fire hazards in the home, with smoke killing many more people than flames. Householders should check their homes for potential fire sources and escape routes. Smoke alarms are widely available and should be fitted in every home to increase chances of surviving a fire.

Car fires are caused by accidents, outside influences, such as welding, and electrical faults, and deliberate action for fraudulent insurance claims. Car fires in the UK increased by 12% to 44,527 fires in 1990, and accounted for 133 deaths. The car itself is responsible for 46% of total car fires. Fire extinguishers are compared and case histories are included.
