Thirty-three GSM handportable cellular telephones were evaluated and three were rated as best buys in the category. The Motorola MicroTAC 8700 was recommended for its vast array of features, its excellent battery performance, and its support services. The Siemens S4 Power proved to be an excellent all-round performer with good display features and excellent battery power offering 600 minutes talk time and 70 hours standby time. The Nokia 1610 was recommended for users requiring a good budget phone, but it cannot be used for mobile data applications.
