Article Abstract:
The increasingly complex and flexible nature of software has led people to build up increasingly large systems which have eventually gone beyond human understanding. The failure of software systems is a reflection of a wider failure of human efforts to create complex structures in architecture, politics and engineering. Computing technologists have internalised the modernist tradition, and it is now time for a shift towards externalisation, ensuring that people regain control over software and other structures.

Road testing is the most effective way of testing the performance of motor oils, since it best approximates the real-world experience of consumers. Results are presented of test determining whether price differences in various brands of motor oils, based on service grades and viscosity, are justified.
