Article Abstract:

A scanner can capture an image and convert it into digital form. Scanners and scanning software are becoming easier to install, configure and use and prices have fallen. The popularity of scanning is increasing with the growth of the Internet. There are three main types of scanner, flatbed which can scan anything, sheetfed, producing more professional results, and hand-held. Scanners usually attach to three common PC interfaces, the Small Computer System Interface, parallel port, and EPP and ECP. The Universal Serial Bus (USB) will ultimately replace the parallel and serial port. Scanners are available from high street stores, computer superstores and office supplies.

The advent of the laser printer was expected to eliminate the market for matrix printers, but for some applications a matrix printer is a good choice. Matrix printers are valuable for printing labels, multi-part stationery and envelopes. Matrix printers are available in three main types: 9 pin for low-cost applications, 18 pin for heavy-duty data input, and 24 pin for best print quality. Tips for buying and running a matrix printer are presented.

The Seiko ColorPoint 820ps, priced at 6,200 pounds sterling, is a good value colour thermal printer. It has a memory of 16MB with an option to upgrade to 136MB and the capability of swapping the thermal roll for a dye sublimation package. Adobe PostScript is standard and a good number of standard interfaces is offered, including Ethernet. Other colour thermal printers are evaluated.
