Switch accounts for a better deal
Article Abstract:
Selecting the best current accounts depends on variables such as whether users stay in credit or are usually overdrawn. Good accounts for people who stay in credit are the Abbey National Bank Account, Midland Meridian and Nationwide BS FlexAccount because they offer a good level of service and pay interest of at least 0.5% gross if the account has 100 pounds sterling in it. Bank of Scotland Chequeplus, First Direct Cheque Account and the Royal Bank of Scotland Interest Paying Current Account are good for overdrafts of over 100 pounds sterling.

No mutual benefit
Article Abstract:
Customers of the Birmingham Midshires building society are to vote on plans for its acquisition by The Royal Bank of Scotland in 1998. The building society offers poor interest rates, yet boasts 300,000 new customers over the last 30 months. The jump in new customers is attributed to speculation of a takeover and a subsequent windfall for clients. Due to the high number of new customers, the eventual windfall is not expected to be very high.

Packaged deal
Article Abstract:
Some larger banks are encouraging customers to change to a new type of current account which charges a monthly fee for a package of special benefits. The aim is to increase profitability and encourage customer loyalty. Most of the benefits on offer are of dubious value, although some, like free annual travel insurance, may be worth considering. Overall, packaged current accounts are of limited value.
