Taken to the cleaners?: Our survey shows that you can't expect sound, reliable advice from dry-cleaners

Article Abstract:

Researchers visited dry-cleaners throughout England and Scotland to test the quality of advice. An expert identified four important points for each problem stain, but only one of the 60 dry-cleaners covered those four points, and 10 failed to cover any. The three major national chains of dry cleaners were compared for service and price and although Sketchley and Johnson fared better than Safeway or independents, there was room for improvement by all.

Services provided by dry cleaners are mostly satisfactory and there is little difference in charges across the UK. A good dry cleaner should ask about stains on garments and check the garments' fibre content. Reputable cleaners belong to the Textile Services Association. Several home stain removal products are evaluated.
