Discussion on a geological map of the southern Deccan Traps, India and its structural implications
Article Abstract:
A critique was made on the use of chemically classified 'formations' as a basis for stratigraphic reconstruction of the Deccan Trap volcanic province of India. It was reasoned that such assumptions without regard to the spatial configurations of the structures under study cannot be but incorrect generalizations, for it fails to take into account local anomalies and inconsistencies. The counter-argument was that the geochemical parameters were used only in the light of previous studies showing that such methods are valid in uncovering the general and over-all patterns.

Simulation of geological processes using an expert system
Article Abstract:
The use of computer simulations of geological processes was forwarded as a viable and economical study tool and an example presented by way of illustration. Problems in geological studies which have a considerable impact on simulations were considered and the recommendation was that an expert system be used in the simulations to be able to address the problems. It was also recommended that the use of simulations using expert systems be encouraged alongside data collection and traditional manual systems and operations.

Geological applications of GIS
Article Abstract:
The Geosicence Information Group AGM held a conference at the NERC Unit for Thematic Information Systems, Reading University on Sep 17, 1991. The meeting discussed Geological Information Systems (GIS), its applications to geological problems and the development of technical innovations for assessing other problems. The conference offered 8 research papers and demonstrated 5 GIS applications.
