Discussion on vitrinite reflectivity and the structure and burial history of the Old Red Sandstone of the Midland Valley of Scotland
Article Abstract:
An analysis of vitrinite reflectivity and the structure and burial history of the Old Red Sandstone of the Midland Valley of Scotland reveals the reflectivity values to be much lower than expected given the presence of 9 km of sediments. Researchers predict that the isostatic unroofing that occured in the area after its uplift stripped off thick sections of strata. This information strengthens the findings that the proto-Atlantic shelf underwent a period of burial and uplift.

Discussion on vitrinite reflectivity and the structure and burial history of the Old Red Sandstone of the Midland Valley
Article Abstract:
Questions have been raised against the conclusions reached by a recent study on the thin Siluro-Devonian succession in Kincardineshire and tectonism's strong influence on sedimentation. The questions revolve around the study's conclusions about the location of breaks within the succession and the position of the Silurian-Devonian boundary as well as its usage of reflectivity-temperature conversions. However, it was shown that the questions do not have any basis.

Discussion on vitrinite reflectivity and the structure and burial history of the Old Red Sandstone of the Midland Valley
Article Abstract:
The conclusions reached by a group of researchers regarding the thin Siluro-Devonian succession in Kincardineshire and the strong influence of tectonism on sedimentation is borne out by the results of the British Geological Society's mapping of the Lower Devonian succession in the northeast Midland Valley. However, questions surround the adequacy of the researchers' interpretation of their results.
