Herbivory and 'Ipomopsis aggregata': the disadvantages of being eaten
Article Abstract:
Experimental results that showed dramatic beneficial effects of grazing on scarlet gilia (Ipomopsis aggregata) were contradicted by the results of subsequent experiments. The effects of grazing, simulated by clipping of shoots, were a dramatic reduction of the population and delayed maturation of seeds. The roots did not become heavier and no overproduction of fruits or buds was observed. The overcompensation reported in the previous experiment conducted in Flagstaff, AZ, is not a general trait but could be a manifestation of the high variability of the species.

Consumers as maximizers of matter and energy flow in ecosystems
Article Abstract:
A general and abstract nutrient-limited ecosystem model helps in defining the conditions at which consumers act as optimizers of matter and energy flow in ecosystems. Consumers must act as regulators of the flow of matter in the ecosystem, amounts of nutrients in the ecosystem should be greater than some boundary value and the rate of matter consumption must be average to facilitate consumers to act as maximizers of matter and energy flow in the ecosystem.

Effect of herbivory and plant species replacement on primary production
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that grazing optimization is dependent on soil nutrient improvement and conservation in the presence of herbivory. This balance is affected by herbivore preference, plant community composition, and recycling efficiencies.
