Crustal structure and the mechanical properties of extended continental lithosphere in the Valencia trough (western Mediterranian)
Article Abstract:
The evolution and structure of the Valencia troughin the western Mediterranean is examined via seismic, gravity and well data. Seismic refraction-derived current structure and structure at the time of rifting as indicated by seismic reflection and well data backstripping, are compared. A model involving the acquisition of little or no strength after rifting by the extended continental crust and lithosphere best conserves the Moho. Anomalies can be attributed to crustal removal or Mallorcan orogenic loading.

Magmatism and the causes of continental break-up
Article Abstract:
The Tectonic Studies Group held a conference from Oct 3-4, 1991 at the Geological Society in London. The two-dayb meeting was set for discussing the relationships between continental extension, supercontinent break-up, magmatism and plumes. Geophysicists, geochemists and tectonic geologists contributed to the meeting. It was established that a link between magmatism and break-up cannot be clearly defined. However, the association between such break-up and flood basalt provinces was valid.
